A good salary doesn’t automatically give you control over your time. That was the problem Dave England wanted to solve when he began looking for a different way to work.
In this episode, Lewis Smith and James Eardley talk with Dave about his first months building a high-ticket ecommerce store. His story includes doubts, new skills, regular orders and a commercial sale that helped him see where he wanted to take the business next.

★ A Different Business, Not Just A Different Employer — Dave enjoyed his software engineering career in London, but describes days that were closer to seven-to-seven than nine-to-five, with a long commute on top. There was little time left outside work. Setting up a software-as-a-service business meant working for himself, yet still being closely involved throughout the day. He wanted a business that could give him more control over how he spent his time.
★ Making A Decision Despite The Doubts — Dave’s first reaction to Dropship Unlocked was scepticism. He questioned why successful business owners would sell a course and wondered whether it was another online money-making scheme. He says the free workshop, Lewis’s enthusiasm and his own motivation to change direction helped him take the next step. He encourages people with similar doubts to do their due diligence and consider what is right for them.
★ Learning What He Didn’t Know — A technical background made building the website enjoyable, but Dave was surprised by the depth of the niche research process. He felt it created foundations rather than leaving him to run with an untested idea. He also valued learning alongside other beginners while getting advice from members further along in their businesses.
★ Keeping Google Ads Simple — Advertising was the hardest part for Dave, and he says he is still learning. His way of making it manageable is to focus on a few important things rather than trying to understand everything at once. He compares it to navigating a bright, busy city by choosing one point to work towards. The practical lesson is to keep learning and make small adjustments without becoming overwhelmed.
★ The Difference Between A First Sale And Consistency — Dave remembers hearing his first sales notification while at the pub with friends. It was exciting, but regular orders over the first few weeks of advertising mattered more to his confidence. A week with four or five sales helped him see that customers could find the store and buy repeatedly. Roughly three months after the store went live, he reports around £10,500 in turnover.
★ What A Commercial Customer Taught Him — One commercial order stood out. Dave says it began at around £4,200, with another £400–£500 added through requirements for the installation. He reports around £1,100 profit on that sale. He also describes a longer sales cycle for business customers and says the stronger margins he has found on that side of his niche are influencing his plans. These are Dave’s reported results from his own store, rather than a fixed outcome for every order or business.
★ Designing For The Freedom He Wanted — Dave now talks about fitting work around his life, sometimes taking a few hours during the day and working in the evening. He plans to travel through France and Spain in his campervan while continuing to work. To help customers choose suitable products without turning his role into an all-day consultation service, he has built a guided process on the site. He is also planning a second, more consumer-focused store, using what he learned from the first.
★ Taking The First Step — Dave is clear that building the business required effort and is not a get-rich-quick scheme. His experience has given him a foundation to keep improving. At the end of the episode, Lewis answers Elizabeth’s question about where to start by pointing her towards the free training and the HomeTurf Advantage model.
